Federal student loans offer benefits that many other loans don’t. One benefit is the ability to qualify for loan forgiveness—under special circumstances, the federal government may forgive part, or all, of your federal student loans.

Some of the most common types of loan forgiveness and discharge:

    • Public Service Loan Forgiveness (and Temporary Expanded Public Service Loan Forgiveness)
    • Teacher Loan Forgiveness
    • Closed School Discharge
    • Total and Permanent Disability Discharge

    Eligibility for loan forgiveness

Income limits apply: an individual’s income must be less than $125,000 or less than $250,000 for married couples to qualify. And most people will need to fill out applications.

Under President Joe Biden’s plan, the Department of Education will cancel up to $10,000 in federal student loan debt for individual borrowers who make below $125,000 per year or less than $250,000 for married borrowers or those who are heads of households.

You may also be eligible for an additional $10,000 in relief if you received federal Pell Grants while enrolled in college.

The PSLF program cancels the remaining balance on a student loan after the borrower makes 120 qualifying monthly payments.

If you are employed by a government or non-profit organization, you may be able to receive loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program.

    Important Limited PSLF Waiver

On October 6, 2021, the U.S. Department of Education’s office of Federal Student Aid (FSA) announced a temporary period during which borrowers may receive credit for payments that previously did not qualify for PSLF or TEPSLF.

This change will apply to student loan borrowers with Direct Loans, those who have already consolidated into the Direct Loan Program, and those who consolidate into the Direct Loan Program by October 31, 2022. For more information on the limited PSLF waiver.

How do I request a refund of student loan payments?

To request a refund of any payments made since March 13, 2020, the Department of Education recommends contacting your specific loan servicer to request a refund.

If you reach out, have details about your loan and payments on hand including how much you paid and the dates of your payments.

The Department of Education’s Federal Office of Student Aid website also has information on the loan services and forgiveness plan, although the site has also been experiencing lags because of the high volume of traffic.

Will a Parent Plus loan be forgiven?

Yes, if the parents meet the income limits. But again, the forgiveness amount is only up to the $10,000 or $20,000 mark, whichever applies based on whether the student had a Pell Grant in college.

If the loans are already in the Direct Loan program, and the parent made payments on them during the pandemic, the parents should ask the loan servicer for a refund if the payments brought the loan balance below the $10,000 or $20,000 cap, as applicable.
